What is organic cotton?
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming.
A number of clothing companies are supporting cotton suppliers that are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). As well as guaranteeing that the cotton produced is organic, the standard includes an audit of the working conditions in the yarn factory and verifies that:
- Employment is freely chosen, and the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected.
- Child labor is not used.
- Regular employment is provided, living wages are paid, working hours are not excessive, and working conditions are safe and hygienic.
- No discrimination is practiced, and no harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed.
Benefits of wearing cotton
Cotton absorbs moisture easily and is therefore very comfortable to wear-it offers superb insulation properties keeping you cool in the heat and providing warmth when needed. Cotton is also hypo-allergenic which means it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin or cause allergies. Our cottons have a luxurious soft feel and have just enough strech in them for movement offering comfort and durability.
